— technology, fiction — 5 min read
Hi,
This article is about reasons I personally uphold, which makes me curious about fiction and technology, while this is a generic interest for many people, I am here to project my personal biases regarding this intersection.
Growing up in an Indian household my dreams were very much limited to my neighbors achievements and at that time a formal degree in Engineering or Medical was a good enough option for almost all my friends,
We used to evaluate our curiosities based on the grades we received at schools.
Me being moderately decent at science thought of the same but hey this is not even close to the reason as to why I am curious about technology, looking backwards I think these are some factors pivoting me to this direction.
To understand why I am curious about technology we have to take a small pivot towards the awesome world of Disney and Cartoon Network.
I have spent my entire childhood watching cartoons and imagining scenarios where I somehow am equipped with superpowers and I am sure most folks reading this have done the same at some point in their lives.
There is a subtle influence towards science and technology we inherit from cartoons when we venture into the world of fiction, particularly fiction revolving around technology/magic or any other artificial construct that wouldn't have been otherwise possible in reality and that is the whole point of the cartoons right?
To create a world where we can extend our imaginations and build upon it in our own reality (also viewership for a specific industry)
It is astounding to me, how much fiction/cartoons in general contributes towards certain technological endeavors. The wormhole sucks almost everyone in it.
1/N DOREMON:
Seeing Doremon pull out gadgets to solve daily problems for Nobita taught me how cool tools are for specific use cases.
As a child the utility of torch made little sense to me but when I visualized it as a tool to navigate monsters, it became magical for me to carry it around.
2/N PHINEAS AND FERB:
Yes software is eating the world and IT has a lot of money but that is not my reason for perusing it, I grew up watching Phineas and Ferb experimenting with crazy ideas testing their limits, solely for fun.
I still remember building paper swords and those color games just for fun, while those things did fade away with age but the notion for building stayed forever.
3/N KITERETSU:
If at that time someone would have told me that we can actually build time machines, I would have given it a deep thought, which tells us a lot about how cartoons/fiction shapes our approach towards solving problems which we would have otherwise discarded.
2/N POWER RANGERS:
Damn those SPD morphers, I really wanted those to play with when I was a kid, the idea that we can have multiple tools in a single phone like device fascinated the hell out of me and years later here we are, having mobile phones almost equivalent to computers.
2/N FLASH:
As I grew older, I ventured into the world of marvel and DC, and that sure was some serious abstraction with respect to the reality we live in. Meta human abilities used to of interest to me but this took it to another level, more I watched more I pivoted towards science hence technology.
It must be very evident now, that the environment I grew up in and the abstractions I surrounded myself had a lot to do with why technology in particular was my area of interest.
I was fortunate enough to be guided by interest and land up in a place where my curiosities somewhat aligns with what I am doing, most people are not this fortunate so I guess it was win watching cartoons after all :))
We underestimate the influence of a culture on ourselves, being surrounded with fiction/cartoons, I spent most of my time constructing realities where I can accomplish more than my physical capabilities allow me to.
Everyone has a favorite genre, while my friends had horror and thrillers as theirs, I engulfed myself with magic science-fiction and superheroes, which somehow made it very easy for me to map the world of non-fiction with fiction,
there is no particular reason as to why I love fiction, I would be forcing myself to justify the reason for my curiosity If I tried to explain it and I guess I will have to again thank Doremon and Phineas for this interest.
Now that we know where my interests originates from, let me project my perspective in a more broader sense:
In my opinion it is very difficult to talk about fiction and technology separately, almost all the fictional stories I have personally interacted with revolves around something unnatural, while it may not be technology in particular but the fact that human beings use technology as a tool to move closer to their imaginations adds to my opinion.
I have talked a significant bit about fiction and technology and my eyes lit up every time I express my views on this particular topic,

Web 3.0 is the magical adventure we all have been waiting for and here's why👇🏻
Where NFT projects particularly excel
If we stop and look back at the technological innovations that have happened in past to serve us this present we will find a lot of interconnections between our imaginations and technology as a tool to achieving it.
Technology for me is a tool by which I can recreate the reality I used to envision in my childhood, technology makes it possible for us to define ourselves apart from our names, technology gives us a means to portray our skills as superpowers. Internet sub-cultures can do wonders if aligned towards a specific public output and we are witnessing it with DAOs ( Decentralized Autonomous Organization).
With the concept of NFTs as utilities it makes it very much possible to create a world with fruits having superpowers and quests as a form of social currency, all of which is actually happening btw.
Technology gives us the tools and fiction helps us visualize our narratives around that tool, It helps in shaping our approach similar to what watching Keiretsu did for me. This is not the first time human beings have familiarized themselves with fiction and superpowers, fantasy worlds have existed since long before we were born, the only difference between now and then is the technological advancement we have.
We currently can deploy technology which is more suited to recreating alternative realities compared to what was previously possible.
Projecting my curiosity is way more difficult than I thought It would be, writing this somewhat makes my ideas and beliefs easier by serving as token of communication. I am still exploring which parts I like more and which Ideas resonates with me the highest,
Its a quest I have taken up for myself and I intend to use this medium as an exploration for the world I create ahead.
Hope you get a gist of what I am curious about, if not just hit me up, would love to exchange narratives :))
